CHINESE COURAGE
PRESSMAN’S HIGH TRIBUTE A striking tribute to the courage and high morale of the Cantonese in times of the gravest crisis is paid by Mr Hessell Tiltman, war correspondent of the London Daily Express and author of several books on Chinese affairs. No praise could be too great, he said, for the calm courage with which the people of Canton, from General Wu Teh-chen, Governor of Kwangtung, to the poorest coolie were facing the 'hours of supreme trial. "Directly the first bomb falls in a raid,” said Mr Tiltman, “the ambulances and rescue squads are racing to the scene, superbly indifferent to the bombs crashing around them. In the course of covering the news in 40 countries and across four continents I have j seen human courage at its best ! and finest, but never have I seen ■a grander and more moving display of comradeship and personal bravery than in Canton during the recent red weeks. The Cantonese are not only prepared to live for China—they have proved their readiness to die for China. Thousands have died—and earned from the world a salute to the brave.”
