CALLS ON BANK SHARES.

AUCKLAND, August 27. At the Magistrate's Court to-day several cases for non-payment of a call in the Bank of New Zealand came before Mr Northcroft, S.M. The first heard was that of the Bank of New Zealand v. William Barrett Williams. Defendant resides at Lake Takapuna. This was a claim to recover £sl and interest, being the third instalment of the call in respect to forty-five shares held by defendant in the Bank of New Zealand. Defendant, who appeared in person, said, in answer to His Worship, that he had a paralytic stroke and could not work. He had paid two calls, all that he could. He had no means, and was seventy-four years of age. He had saved up and invested in shares to make provision for his old age. Mr Hanna said that the directors * were compelled to take proceedings against all defaulting shareholders in justice to those who fiad paid up the call. It was not a case of persecution. Mr Northcroft said that at one time it was looked upon as fortunate to have shares in the Bank of New Zealand; now it was looked upon as unfortunate. He had no alternative but to give judgment for £53 lis 4d, with costs (£5 8s). In a second cawg<tb« Bank of New Zealand v. Mrs Madeline Gilmour, of Parnell, defendant did not appear, and judgment was given for £35 7s 10d, with costs (£3 Is). In the other cases judgment was confessed.
