Mr Tubman, at the Inst County Council meeting, answered Mr Mervyn's strictures re Ranger Smith. It is quite true, however, as Mr Mervyn said, that the Ranker did not pull well with the cattle owners, and hence (it is understood) his not being a candidate for the office. Mr Tubman passed a high eulogium on the Ranger, and in our opinion the Council loses in Mr Smith a faithful servant. We share Mr Tubman's regret at this loss, believing that Mr Smith's rangership was characterised by suavity of manner combined with great energy. That the Ranger did not succeed in winning the confidence of everybody is as much his misfortune as his fault ; and is a misfortune which is rather the rule in this world than the exception. We tmst the new Ranger (Mr Gordon) will have a long and successful career in the management of what is, by common consent, a splendid property, and one which has great possibilities in the future. It will be his business to improve that property, under the direction and with the cooperation of the Committee, who are all thoroughly practical men and, know what its capabilities are.
