ATHENÆUM CONCERT AND DANCE.
The concert and dance for the benefit of the funds of the Athenjeum took place on Monday evening. Owing to the shortness of the notice and to the unsettled state of the weather, the attendance was not so large as it otherwise would have been, but what was wanting in numbers was amply made up in willingness to be pleased. The following programme was gone through in excellent style : —Glee, "Lordly Gallants," Miss Higgs, and Messrs Hyndman and Fish ; song, " Father, dear, forgire mc," Miss Annie Broad ; song, '• We'd better bide a wee," Mr Holman; son?, " Juanita," Mr 'Hyndman ; song, «' Rocked in the cradle of the .deep," Mrs Michelle; song, " Burke and Wills," Mr Mercer; sonsr, M Oh, Let the world go rcund," Mr W. Smith; .song, "Kathleen Mavourneen," Mr Heron; song, " Mother's Wedding Ring," Mr James.Giffan; song, " Despised for being poor," Miss Higgs; recitation, " Casibianca," Miss Annie Broad; glee, " Ye Shepherds tell me," Miss Higgj, and Messrs Hyndman and Fish ; song, " Belle Mahone," Mr W. Orr; songr, "Home they brought her warrior dead," Mr Holman; song, .*• Hazel Dell," Mrs Michelle; song, "Theheart bowed down," Mr Heron. Several of the performers received encores, to which they responded. At the close of the concert, Mr Coop, in a few graceful words, expressed to the meeting the thanks of the Atheuftuim Committee.
The dance which followed was kept up with great spirit till midnight, by about fifteen couples of excellent dancers. Mr Burton presided at the piano, both at the concert and the dance, and at the latter Mr M'Douall acted as MC. Both gentlemen acquitted themselves with their usual we'l-known ability. Altogether, the success which attended the opening meeting of the season augurs well for the success of the remaining reunions which are in the contemplation of the Athenaeum Committee. We should not omit to refer in terms of unqualified praise to the excellent services rendered by the lately appointed hall-keeper, Mr Davis. He is emphatically the right man in the right place.
