Progress Report on Rehabilitation
(Per 'Press Association.) WELLINGTON. March 19. Announcing that nearly £1,500,000 had been authorised as financial assistance for demobilised service personnel to the cud of January, tho Minister of Rehabilitation, Hou. 12. F. Skinner, said the total authorisations were; Furchaso of farms, 199 applications involving £554,149; purchase or erection of houses, 0-11 applications involving £052,795; purchase of tools of trade, 121 applications involving £3915; purchase of businesses, 223 applications involving £79,731; purchase or furniture, 1577 applications involving £110,505, The total number of servicemen and women demobilised to the end of January was 37,558, comprising 18,901 returned from overseas and 18,594 from home service. Tho figures showed that 9371 service personnel were being self-placed with pre-service employers, 11,872 as not yet discharged were on leave, in hospital, or recuperating, etc. Those whose intentions were undecided number 381, undergoing full-time training 512, placed with pre-service employer 174, placed without subsidy with other private employers 3350> self-placed with other private employers 0737, placed without subsidy in State employ 449, self-placed without subsidy in State employ 451, acquired own business or farm 090, depending on private means 130, refused help and unable to trace 872, enrolled for placement 107, left New Zealand 70, deceased 144, established a homo (women) 110. Since the inception of the scheme for rehabilitation, from March 1, 1943, to January 29 last, £220,210 had been disbursed. In addition special grants totalling £l3lO had been made.
