Awe-inspiring Spectacle In Vesuvius Eruption

Received Monday 8.50 p.m. LONDON, March 20. Vesuvius is erupting to the accompaniment of thunderous rumblings, says a Naples message. Thousands of Allied soldiers on Saturday night watched an awe-inspiring spectacle when a molten torrent flowed down the mountainside, creating a fiery glow in the sky. Neapolitans say the eruption is the most severe since 1933. A later report states that a stream a quarter of a mile wide and seven feet high is pouring from Vesuvius, says Reuter’s Naples correspondent. There is no sign of abatement in the stream which is only a mile from the houses in Torre del Greco.
