Australia’s Vanishing Population
Received Friday, 7.50 p.m. CANBERRA, March 17. “Unless something is done about Australia’s population problem the Australian flag will have to be hauled down in 50 years’ time,” Dr. Gaha (Labour, Tasmania) declared in the House of Representatives. He suggested that when the Prime Minister (Mr. Curtin) visited Britain he should inquire into the steps being taken there to stem the decline in the birthrate. Dr. Kaha said he thought Australia might well follow Britain’s example and set up a royal commission to ascertain whether the decline in the birthrate was due to economic, social, science or genetic causes. Statistics showed that it would not be many years before Australia’s deathrate would exceed the birthrate. The population was being maintained purely at the expense of longevity and the stage would soon be reached when a considerable proportion of the population would be in the old group.
