Allies’ Strategic Aims All Achieved
LONDON, March 16. Replying to criticism of the slow progress of the Italian campaign, the Secretary of War, Mr. Stimson, told a Press conference in Washington that all the Allies’ broad strategic purposes have been achieved: firstly, the opening of the Mediterranean to Allied shiping; second, the knocking out of Italy as an Axis partner; third, the seizure of air bases in Southern Italy; fourth, Allied control of a large part of the Adriatic; fifth, indirect help to the Rus sian winter campaign by pinning down 19 German divisions; sixth, inflicting German casualties which substantially exceed tho Allied casualties. Mr. Stimson pointed out that the weather had caused slow progress in mountainous areas both on the ground and in the air.
