Spearhead of Assault Against Cassino

Drive Right Through Ruins of Town (By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright.) Received Saturday, 12.35 a.m. LONDON, March 17. The Fifth Army’s New Zealand troops have been the spearhead of the assault against Cassino, states the latest Allied communique from Italy. They fought their way through the town to its southwestern outskirts. New Zealanders and Indians have also taken prominent features overlooking the town despite strong opposition. Three small attacks against the Fifth Army Anzio beachhead were repulsed. Eighth Army patrols have been very active, clashing with the enemy at many points and inflicting casualties. Tactical Air Force medium bombers yesterday attacked gun positions at Ponte Corvo and in the Piedimonte area. Fighter-bombers bombed guns at Esperia. Coastal Air Force medium bombers attacked the docks at Leghorn and fighter-bombers attacked shipping on the West Italian coast. Bombers last night again attacked the railway yards at Sofia. Three enemy planes were destroyed yesterday for the loss of four Allied aircraft. The Mediterranean Air Force flew 1144 sorties while the enemy carried out approximately 30 sorties over the battle area. The Rome radio claims that the annihilation of the enemy forces which penetrated Cassino is progressing. The Exchange Telegraph Company’s Algiers correspondent says the Allies now hold all but the southwest section of Cassino. The Germans in the southwest corner are resisting fiercely and using the ruins as strongpoints.
