FINAL GALLOPS AT AWAPUNI BIG PROGRAMME YESTERDAY GOING MUCH IMPROVED Heavy rain in the late afternoon and steady rain during the night improved the course proper at Awapuni quite a lot and the going should be perfect for Saturday. There was a big programme yesterday morning when horses were given their final gallops. The times, however, were comparatively slow and the flags were 40 feet out. Horses to impress included Rink, Aletlvea, Bunsby, Alienate, Yogi and Crucible over a mile, Vera Lynn, Sir Bradbury, Lady Spiral and Flying Ace over seven, Foxcover over six, Subdued and Killeymoon over five, and Tlieol&teral over four. Kol Ragi galloped on Tuesday and he and Clarice were exercised. Both look very fit. All the fast work took place on the course proper and trials were limed as under:— Over a Mile. Rink (S. Waddell) and Alethea (W. J. Stevens. They began quietly with Rink on the outer. The pace was solid from the seven and they ran to the three in 1.9 2-5, coming home in better than 41 to complete in 1.50. Alethea was under a good hold at the finish and Rink was going very kindly, the pair being together. Nighean (,M. Andrews), on her own, ran to the three in 1.11. She was not doing her best over the last three and she took 1.54 2-5 for the full distance. Bunsby (H. N. Wiggins) and Alienate (V. Sellars) were responsible for the best of the morning over the distance. They ran the first live in 1.10 and they finished well to break 40 for the last three, completing in 1.49 4-5. Langue d’Or (S. Waddell) and Abdicate (A. S. Ewan) did not look to be out to break the watches but they worked kindly in completing in L 53, the last three in 41 3-5. Yogi (B. H. Morris) was picked up by Crucible (J. Campbell) short of the seven. He began well and he broke 1.9 for the first five. They were together at the home turn and Yogi came home strongly to cover the full distance in 1.51. Over Seven Furlongs. Vera Lynn was well clear of Our Pat after covering the full distance in 1.365. Flying Ace (Wiggins) came home in better than 44 to complete in 1.3 S 3-5. He was never under pressure; in fact Wiggins took some time to get him down to the work required of him.
