Heavy Attacks on Central Pacific Islands
Received Thursday, 7.45 p.m. WASHINGTON, March 15. “Our air forces in the Central Pacific attacked seven enemy-held bases on Monday,” says a Pacific Fleet communique. “Planes bombed aerodromes, installations and mining facilities on Ponape. Liberators bombed Kusaie and a beached cargoship was bombed and machinegunned. Oroluk atoll was attacked by Navy search planes. “Four bases in the Eastern Marshalls were attacked and fires started in all the bases. Navy search planes shot down an enemy medium bomber 250 miles northwards of Truk. Wo lost no planes in any of these operations.” The Honolulu correspondent of the New York Times says Oroluk atoll, first mentioned in ta-day’s communique, is a small circular reef about 15 miles long and ten miles wide. It is the only island which is 165 miles westwards of Ponape and 190 miles eastwards of Truk and is almost on a direct line between the two bases. It is useful to the Japanese as an observation post.
