Mr. R. M. Macfarlane, M.P., ha* beetf selected as the official Labour candidatl for the Christchurch Mayoralty. Lieutenant-Colonel J. Hunter Will relinquishes the appointment of senidfe medical officer at a northern mobilise* tion camp and is posted to the list, according to a Gazette notice issued last night. Mr. A. IL Allen, Mayor of Dunedin, for two terms, has intimated that he will not bo a candidate for reelectiou. This leaves two in tho field, Or* Cameron, citizens’ committee nominee, and Dr. McMillan, Labour. Miss K. Danetree, examiner for tho Roj'al {Schools of Dancing, London, arrives in Palmerston North to-morrow and will conduct examinations in tfiis centre. .She will h # accompanied Lethe district organiser, Miss Gwen Gibbs, M.8.A.D., L.1.5.T.D., on her visits to AVanganui, Taranaki au«t Hawke’s Bay. At a meeting of the National War Savings committee on Wednesday morning the chairman (Mr. N. A. Nash ) referred in regretful terms to the fact that it was the last meeting Mr. W. J. Minoguo would attend as Chief Pottrnaster, owing to his retirement at the end of March. Mr. Nash thanked Mr. Minogue for his valuable assistance in placing the facilities of the Post Office at the committee *s disposal and his many courtesies. He expressed the hope that Air. and Mrs. Alinogue would enjoy a long and happy retirement. Mr. Minogue briefly acknowledged these remarks and voiced his appreciation of tho association on tho committee with all good wishes for its continued success. A complimentary dinner was tendered Air. J. P. lunes by the Palmerston North Law Society to mark the completion of 50 years’ practice at the bar in this city. The president of the society (Mr. B. J. Jacobs) presided and among those present were Alessrs. H. P. Lawry, S.M., C. A. Loughlin (Otane), C. O. Pratt (Registrar of the Supreme Court), E. E. Jlaggitt and K. C. Clayton. Mr. Jacobs congratulated Mr. Innes on the completion of such a long term in practice (a unique term in this district) and made him a presentation to serve as a reminder of the respect ond admiration of his fellow practition ers. Mr. Inucs suitably responded and gave some interesting reminiscences culled from his experiences. Air. Lawry proposed the toast of the Palmerston North Law Society and Air. Loughnan, who was formerly Crown Prosecutor in Palmerston North, responded. Air. and Airs. J. C. Christian, of Awahuri, have received advice that their sou, Gunner AI. Christian, was recently publicly commended on parade for his work in recent operations in the Pacific while serving with an independent battery attached to the Third New Zealand Division. In a letter to Air. Christian, Gunner Christian’s commanding officer (Major G. R. Eowles) said: “He was outstanding in his ready willingness to work long hours under difficult conditions and in the reliability and efliciency with which he carried out his duties.” Gunner Christian was educated at the Lytton Street School, Feilding, and the Palmerston North Boys’ High School. Later, ho took up farming with his father. In a recent casualty list appeared the name of Trooper D. I. Stevens, who was reported wounded. Trooper Stevens, who is a son of L.A.C. J. Stevens, K.N.Z.A.F., and Airs. Stevens, of Jtuahine Street, Palmerston North, was born in Auckland 22 years ago. He received his education at the Hokowhitu School and the Palmerston North Boys’ High School, and worked with the Railway Department until entering camp three years ago as a Territorial. in 1942 he proceeded overseas, serving in the Tank Corps in North Africa and Italy. Trooper Stevens was a popular Association football player, being a member of the High School and St. Andrew's junior teams. One brother, Air. John Stevens, is in a Fleet Air Arm operational training unit.
