Tho Palmerston North High Schools ’ Board of Governors met last night, Mr. G. Tremaine presiding in the absence i of Mr. M. H. Gram, M.P. The Rector of tho Boys’ High School (Mr. J. Murray) reported a roll of 352 and average attendance of 343. The Principal of the Technical High School (Air. H. M. Scott) reported that the evening school enrolment showed a very pleasing increase compared with last year, namely 524 on March 3 as against 424 on Alarch 1 last year. The pre-war figure was 534 — only It) more. Board members expressed pleasure at the fact that boys and girls to-day were appreciative of the facilities provided at tho Technical High School. The attendance would be much greater but for the war taking so many away. The total number of students was:—Day school 665, evening 524 —total 1189. Last year it was 1052 on March 1. The increased day roll had resulted in accommodation being taxed to the limit. Air. Scott recommended applying to the Department for a prefabricated portable classroom to place on the soction next the school hall and also securing a price for alterations that would incorporate a verandah in a classroom to give more space.—The board adopted both proposals. The Principal of the Girls’ High School (Atiss E. E. Stephens) reported a roll of 279 and average attendance of 266. A feature of the month had been an all-day visit from the girls of the Foxton District High School, which had been mutually enjoyed. World ship cruises wove all the rage a few yeai-3 ago and will surely come into favour again in the brighter days ahead. But why worry about being “grounded” on the land when there’s a world cruise starting at the George Street Ballroom, Palmerston North, on Wednesday next at 8.30 p.m. Dancers are assured of a rollicking time enjoying a programme with its share of modern, old-time and novelty dancing at what is starred as the 44 ball of the year.”
