Waterside Workers Still Refuse Overtime
e r- MEAT MEAL “STRIKE” STILL e UNSETTLED ie il (Per Pres* Association.) AUCKLAND, March 15.
The four gangs of waterside workers employed on a ship at the Chelsea sugar works persisted to-day in their attitude of refusing overtime unless they were provided with a full meat meal in th« evening without surrendering coupons. The men were asked to work but expressed their intention of knocking off at five o’clock. Under an order of the Waterfront Commission which is the waterside workers’ award any individual man or men who desire to knock off work may state their intention finmediately they are iniormed that a ship will be working overtime. The order states that this is intended to cover special individual cases and does not entitle men to refuse overtime collectively. In this case, although the men have individually stated that they do not wish to work overtime, the result has been that they have all knocked off. The matter has been taken up in Wellington by the ship's agents, but the outcome is not yet known in Auckland. No official statement has been made by the Waterfront Commission or the Auckland Waterside Workers’ Union on the subject.
