Foxton-Shannon Highway Maintenance

Provision of a free grant of money to enable the Foxton-Shannon main highway to be put in order was advised to the Manawatu County Council at its meeting yesterday by the Public Works Department. It was stated that the free grant would be available only during the period this highway was used as a detour while the Whirokino bridge was closed. The Public Works Department suggested that proposals might be prepared by the county for more permanent improvements on the Foxton-Shannon highway. The chairman (Cr. W. JO. Barber) said that the Department’s letter was the outcome of an interview he had had with the Public Works Engineer recently. “It was all very well to talk of a free grant for the maintenance of this road,’ said Mr. H. V. Bond (county engineer;, "but it was a question of material which was not readily available.’’ He estimated that it would cost approximately £4009 to do the job and a top course pit metal was necessary and would cost about £1 pei yard from the county plant which was not in action at present. The idea ol obtaining- suitable metal from Shannon had been explored and a likely pit was being prepared and steps wero being taken to get ready the neces sary machinery together with crushing plant, lie estimated that the metal pit at Shannon would produce 24,000 cubic yards of metal. Mr. Bond went on to say that it was desirable to permanently seal this highway and he was preparing plans to this end. The maintenance work would be put in hand as soon as possible. . The council agreed that the engineei proceed with the maintenance work estimated to cost £4OOO and also draw up proposals for the permanent sealing of this highway.
