Meeting a Great Success

(Special to “Times.") WELLINGTON, March 11. Taking into account the difficulties which had to be overcome the Wellington Pacing Club’s autumn meeting was p great success. There was a large attendance and the totalisator turnover of £ 140,200 10s was only £10,981 10s down. This must he considered a wonderful result. The weather was perfect and the going was good and fast and xnost of the fields were large. CLARICE TOO GOOD Clarice won the North Island Challenge Stakes comfortably from the two-year-aids, Bridge Acre and Colais. Master Baron made the pace till nearing the uti-aight, where Clarice went to the front 'rom Bridge Acre with Master Baron and Jolais next. Clarice drew awfy in the •un home and was being eased up when die passed the post a couple of lengths ihead of Bridge Acre, who was a neck in front of Colais, with Alcyone, who finished well, just heating Silvio for fourth. Clarice was much too good, ffolais was fretful before the race and was not seen at his best. A GOOD PERFORMANCE Bunsby's performance in winning the Iflinnu High weight Handicap was good as ie made a long run from the rear and I hen hung on to score fairly decisively. Advocate and Home Rule led past the si> from Old Glory, Gunga Din, Taitcre. Merger, Queen's Charm, Madame Rachel, [mperium, Tavern Light and Our Pat Advocate led into the straight, where Bunsby had moved up almost on terms end Bunsby went on to win by a length md a half from Queen's Charm, who hnu ;o be ridden out to beat Vivid Night leek for second place. Gunga Djn, aftei using his position, came on again to b< : fourth. Tavern Light was always well j jack, Our Pat ran indifferently and Tai | ere failed to run on. BROIEDAME TOO SOLID Alderman, who was backed to a short price in the Plunket Handicap, led on to Lhe course proper with Broiedame, Sir Boswell, Record Voyage and Theiolyn liandy, but in the run home the favourite weakened and Broiedame ran on past to win decisively from Cinderella, with Record Voyage a good third and Mastei Ted fourth. Alderman was fifth. The winner proved too solid for the opposition. Theiolyn had to cover a lot of ground 01 might have been closer. BATTLEDRESS AT DOUBLE FIGURES Battledress showed another glimpse ol his old form by winning the Autumn Handicap decisively. The early pace was slow and most of the runners were under restraint. Caithness led the way to the back stretch, where Rink ran to the front, and was followed by Caithness, Wee Bun, Aletliea and Battledress, with Glenfalloch last. Rink still had charge when the field turned for home, but Battledress soon cut him down and went on to a comfortable win over him. Palfrey came from the back to be a close third and Foxhaven also finished well to be fourth. Glenfalloch moved into a handy position on the home turn, but did not finish well. Aletliea was well placed most of the way and under a hold, but she was not dangerous in the last couple of furlongs. The most disappointing runner was Foxleap, who never looked likely to BIG DIVIDEND There was a complete boilover in the Tlnakori Handicap which Sally Lux won at odds exceeding three-quarters of a century. Observatory led to the straight where Transcript, Wise Girl, Latin Bay, Chef d'Oeuvre, Lord Darnley and Broiefield were well placed. Wise Girl hit the front, but was displaced by Chcl d’Oeuvre, who seemed to have the race won when Sally Lux swept up on the outer and won going away. Chcl d'Oeuvre had little to spare over Broie field, while Good Cast finished solidly in fourth place. Orient River was hopelessly left. FLYING ACE'S THOMPSON HANDICAP The Thompson Handicap field was not up to usual strength, but it provided a good contest. Moutoa Bond and Worton got away badly, ami when the field had settled down Lady Spiral was the leadei from Alchemy. Tideless moved up to A 1 clieniy nearing the five furlongs and next were Daljarrock, Artie Dawn, Flying Ace and Corday. Lady Spiral led round the home turn from Tideless and Alchemy \.,ih Corday gathering them fast. Corday worked ahead of Lady Spiral, but Flying Ace wore him down in the run home anu won by a neck. Lady Spiral was a fail third, with Lotto finishing solidly- in fourth place. Tideless failed to run on a.. 5 expected. Jonathan Jo began slowly aim was never likely. EASY FOR PALORA Palora comfortably accounted for the Lhe sprinters in the Railway Handicap in which Theolateral lost his chance at the start and Sterling Lad led to the course proper from John Gay, Master Dash and a packed field. Palora came through strongly in Lhe run home and won most decisively from John Gay, who ran one of his best races, and Master Dash, who showed improvement on some of his recent efforts. Sterling Lad did fairly Well to finish fourth after setting the pace hut he was by no means a close fourth. GUNGA DIN SURPRISED Gunga Din, who had unsuccessfully contested the Highweight Handicap, created one of the day’s surprises by winning the Champion Hack Handicap and his dividend approached the quarter century. With a mile to go Silver Sal was in charge from Maharajah, Langue d'Or and High Ideal with SunbJjLze well back and receiving an indifferent passage. Gunga Din was just behind the leaders turning for home and in the race down the straight fought a hard duel with Langue d’Or, Gunga Din winning by a short head. The consistent Keen Play was sticking to his task well at the end and was a good third, while Voltaire finished well to beat the rest. MANAWATU RE-HANDICAPS Rc-haudicaps for Manawatu have been declared as under:— King George Handicap—Battledress 9.6. Adderstone Handicap—Bunsby 8.4. Johnston Memorial —Palora 8.6.
