CHELTENHAM The annual general meeting was presided over by Mrs. V. F. Short, who welcomed the following new members, Mesdames B. Anderson, C. Bailey, Barnard, Campbell, Frecklington, Hoffmeister and Sernadeni. Beautiful baskets of flowers were presented to the president and to the secretary and a posy ot flowers to Mrs. Kidson in appreciation of their work for the Institute. The annual I report and balance sheet showed a ver.v satisfactory state of affairs. In moving the adoption, the president thanked ah I who had helped towards a successful year. Reports were received from the various circles and these showed that an interesting programme had been followed. Mrs. Baker (president, Makino W. 1.), and Mrs. Donaldson acted as tellers and the following committee were elected: Mesdames Ancell, Barltrop, Billett, Corkili, Edelsten, Fitzpatrick, Funnell, Kidson, McFarlane, V. F. Short, Stevens, Wither and Misses 1. and J. Anderson. Mrs. V. F. Short was unanimously reelected president. Several suggestions were received for the coming year’s programme. It was decided to renew the subscription to “Home and Country.” Mrs. Edelsten was appointed a delegate to the Oroua Federation annual meeting and Mrs. H. E. Smith offered to arrange a programme for the circle meeting on April 19. Mr. Somerset gave a talk on “Women in Russia,” which was followed with interest and Mrs. Short, in thanking him, expressed appreciation of the ready help given by Mr. and Mrs. Somerset on many occasions. Competition awards were: Felt novelties, Miss O’Halloran 1, Mrs. Smith 2, Miss Murdock y; savouries, Mrs. Smith 1 ana 2, Mrs. Wither 3. Hostesses were Mesdames Ancell, Kidson and Wenzell. During the afternoon sprays were presented to the tellers and they were thanked foi their help. APJTI The annual meeting was attended by a large gathering of members and visitors from ail neighbouring institutes, who were cordially welcomed by the president, Mrs. W. M. Duncan. The annual report presented by the secretax-y, Mrs. D. McNicol, reviewed a successful year when members have taken full part in Institute and patriotic activities. In speaking to the report, the president thanked all who give so willingly of their time and abilities to make the W.I. function in friendship and harmony. Mrs. W. Hogan presented the balance sheet, disclosing a sound financial position. Mrs. Watkins thanked the president, secretary and treasurer and presented each with lovely flowers expressing the appreciation of members. Mrs. J. Gerke, who was present to conduct the election was the recipient of a dainty shoulder spray as also was the president. Mesdames W. H. Watson and John Jensen and Miss C. Mclntyre brought the posies and sprays. Mr. A. E. Lockett was reappointed auditor and a letter is to be sent thanking him. Mrs. Gerke congratulated the Institute on the year’s work and as the nominations did not exceed the number required for president and committee the following were elected:—President, Mrs. Duncan, committee, Mesdames W. Hogan, A. E. Lockett, Reay Mackay, D. Martin, D. McNicol, C. McKay, J. R. Osborne, A. E. Prujean, L. E. Schmidt, G. Watkins and Miss Strahan. The aggregate points prizes were won as follow: Mrs. F. Munro 1, Mrs. W. M. Duncan 2, Mrs. D. McNicol 3. Most entries trophy for other than prize winner, donated by Mrs. L. E. Schmidt, was won by Mrs. J. Mapson. The afternoon competitions made a bright display and were judged by Mesdames It. Schmidt, Davies and Boyce, members of Kimbolton W. 1., as follow:—Aster (Mrs. Prujean’s prize), Mrs. A. E. Lockett 1 and 3, Airs. Prujean 2; vase for effect, Mrs. Munro 1, Mrs. Ilarland 2 and 3; prettiest oven cloth, Miss C. Mclntyre 1, Mrs. Watson 2, Airs. Simpson 3; collection of jam, Mrs. Watkins 1, Airs. J. F. Jensen 2, Airs. Alunro 3; collection ot vegetables, W. Duncan 1, Aliss C. Alclntyre 2, Airs. G. Simpson 3. tiring from her position as secretary to Oroua Federation. For the next meeting the competitions will be girdle scones (president’s prize), bottled tomatoes and best bloom. The roll call will be “The country I would like to visit after the war.” Tea hostesses who also arranged pleasing floral decorations were Alesdames It. Alackay, H. C. Alclntyre, G. Purnell and Miss AI. Alclntyre. An invitation to Kimbolton W.I. meeting at which the Dominion president, Airs. Barnicoat, will be present, was extended to members. At the subsequent committee meeting Alesdames Watkins and Hogan were elected vice-presidents, Mrs. D. McNicol reelected secretary, and Airs. R. Alackay treasurer. A basket of beautiful dahlias grown by Airs. D. Hogan, a visitor and member of Table Flat W. 1., was the centre of much admiration. Registration foes for motor vehicles were briefly discussed by the council of the Automobile Association (Wellington, after the chairman, Mr. E. A. Batt, had stated that some reduction might be equitable in view of the reduced motoring as a result of the war. It was decided to go into the matter more fully and, if possible, collect figures showing the actual reduction in private cars on the road and the financial position of the third-party insurance pool, and submit them to the N.I.M.U, for further action.
