. “Tlic pupils of the intermediate i- School had over UOO entries in the i. p.N. Horticultural Society’s dahlia v show," stated the principal (Mr. J. C. s Whiblev) in his report to the lntert mediate School Committee. All these entries were in the decorative section, - and he pointed out that in a civilised n community the decorative use of flowers in the home was as important as 11 the arrangement of furniture and the choice of pictures. The girls at the , school were encouraged to lake part in decorative floral work. Makerua Railway Crossing The condition of the Makerua rail* , way crossing was the subject of a discussion at a meeting of the Horowhenua County Council. A letter was received from the Opiki Growers’ Association to the effect that the crossing e was in a bad state, and asked the coun- ’ cil to have the matter attended to. t The clerk (Mr. F. H. Hudson) reported , that he had written to the district eu- . gineer of the Railway Department (Mr. H. L. Smith) regarding the crossing and Mr. Smith replied that the matter , would be attended to immediately. Cr. I .1. D. Aitchison said that the matter i was urgent, as produce growers in the 5 Opiki area were constantly using lhis 1 crossing as the season was at its height. i In its present condition the crossing was a constant danger both to the ■ vehicles and their tyres. If nothing was ; done very soon it would be too late. , Mr. Smith had promised action a forfc- : night ago, but this had not eventuated. The council decided that the district > engineer be written to again, stressing the urgent need for action.
