Notes of the Day
At its meeting on Thursday evening the Feilding Borough Council recorded sympathy with Cr. H. J. Dcwe (deputy Mayor) in his illness and expressed the hope for his speedy recovery. Mr. and Mrs. A. Fraser, of Feilding, have received word from their son, Spr. Reg. Fraser, that he has rejoined his unit after two months in hospital in Italy. Spr. Fraser left the Dominion over three years ago and was formerly on the staff of the Feilding railway. The recent cull cow drive organised by the Feilding Farmers’ Union in conjunction with the Pig Marketing Association proved very successful and it was stated at yesterday’s meeting of the union that further drives were being organised to cover the whole of the district. “My wool is still in the shed and I cannot get it railed,” said a farmer when discussing rail restrictions at yesterday’s meeting of the Farmers’ Union at Feilding yesterday. One could not travel, he said, but it was pretty hot when a farmer could not get his wool away. Others agreed that the national transport system was not now giving the service it once claimed to offer. The reception to servicemen home on furlough to be held next week was referred to at Thursday’s meeting of the Borough Council, when the Mayor stated that arrangements had been completed and it was anticipated that there would be a large gathering in the Drill Halt where the main proceedings would take place. Councillors agreed to lend every assistance in the organisation and a dance with musical items and community singing would follow. Replying to a question by Cr. C. B. McClure at Thursday’s meeting of the Feilding Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr. T. L. Seddon) said that officially the Council knew nothing regarding the State housing programme for Feilding. Indirectly, however, lie was aware that certain builders in Feeding had been approached regarding contracts for the cvection of further houses. It had been stated that, an additional 20 houses were to be erected in the MarlboroughMomnouth Street area. From inquires made it is learned that the issue of gumboots to dairy farmers and farm workers is on a very restricted scale. It was stated at n meeting of the Farmers’ Union in Feilding yesterday that the scale of issue was apparently on the basis of one pair of gumboots per*milking shed. A dairy farmer disagreed, saying that he had put in for three pairs, one for himself, one for his wife and one for his mother. He had received a printed chit stating that no gumboots of his size were available and none were issued for his wife or mother. In another case a farmer had secured a pair while his boy had not been successful. Reporting on the arrangements for the recognition of the services of the Hen. J. G. Cobbe to the district, at Thursday’s meeting of the Feilding Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr. T. L. Seddon) stated that lie had received a letter from the Manawatu Labour Representation Committee unanimously agreeing to support the presentation. Mr. Seddon said that he anticipated that the gathering would take place in the near future and hoped that it would be attended by the Prime Minister (Hon. Peter Fraser), the leader of the Opposition (Mr. S. G. Holland) and Mr. M. H. Oram, M.P. All interests throughout the district wore working in accord to recognise Mr. C.obbo’s long life pf public service.
