Bad Weather Still Holds Up Beachhead Operations
900 SORTIES FLOWN BY ALLIED AIR FORCES Received Saturday, 12.2 a.m. LONDON, March 10. The latest Allied communique from Italy reports that patrols have been active on all fronts. The bad weather continues. Medium bombers yesterday attacked Porto San Stefano and Mont Alto. Light bombers attacked gun positions near Compoleone and the railway of Caprinica northwest of Rome. Patrols were maintained over the battle area. Two of our planes are missing. Two additional enemy planes were destroyed on Wednesday night and one Allied plane reported missing on Wednesday has safely reached base. The Mediterranean Air Force flew approximately 900 sorties. Thirty enemy planes appeared over the battle area. The Exchange Telegraph Company’s Algiers correspondent says that General Freyberg lias been appointed a corps commander in Italy. It is officially annoimced in Algiers that the Allies have taken prisoner 15,000 Germans in Italy since the Salerno landing.
