Will Curtin Stand Up To Striking Miners ?
NO “STRONG WORD AND WEAK ACTION” POLICY. Received Thursday 9.45 p.m. CANBERRA, March 9. The Australian full Cabinet today instructed the new Commonwealth Coal Commissioner (Mr. Norman Mighell) to assume supreme control of certain mines on the South coast , of New South Wales. Cabinet endorsed the handling of the present coal strike by the Prime Minister (Mr. Curtin) and the Attorney-Gen-eral (Dr. Evatt) including the military call-up of young strikers. 1 Under the control of the Coal ) Commissioner the management of the 1 mines and every employee working in them will become responsible not to the owners but to Mr. Mighell. 2 Ownership of the coal will remain r vested in the present owners but the P Commissioner will take over the operations and will do everything 1 necessary to maintain or increase e production. After the Cabinet meeting Mr. i Curtin formally announced that Mr. Mighell had been appointed Coal j Commissioner, thereby vesting him 1 vvith wide powers under the recently c proclaimed Coal Act. 2 If the southern coal strike is not 3 ended within the next fortnight num--5 bers of industries may have to close 2 down, throwing thousands out ol work. Among them are food, storage 2 and processing plants as well as textile mills and foundries. ; ‘ ‘ The strike is a direct challenge to 1 Labour’s claim to administer Austra- ; lia’s war effort,” says the Sydney 2 Morning Herald editorially today, r The paper adds: “This is the supreme test. Mr. Curtin talks about standi ing down from the Prime Ministerl ship, but what the Australian public > wishes to see him do is to stand up i without thought of compromise for the principles he has enunciated, t Whatever criticism he may have earn--5 ed in the handling of past coal troubles his sincerity has never been l in doubt, and he has only to abjure l vacillations between strong words > and weak action to have the nation solidly behind him.” i
