Indignant Soldier A New Zealand soldier’s reaction to < news of the recent Auckland waterfront dispute over the safety of a gangway is contained in a letter which has been received from an officer serving in the Solomons. “The latest waterfront stoppage, and specially the photograph i of the gangway that figured in the dispute has caused inexpressible fury
here,” he says. “Our boys, at 7s 6d a day, have to swarm down a rope into a rocking lighter on the high seas to unload our 14-gallon drums and other heavy cargo with the temperature soaring over 130 degrees. The ship staggers, the sling swings to and fro, and the drums roll about uncontrollably in tho lighter, so that several of the men have been injured and even lost fingers..
