Irish Rebel Leaders Start Hunger Strike

Received Wednesday, 11.50 p.m. LONDON, March 8. Having voted for a hunger strike unto death, Hugh McAteer, the selfstyled chief of staff of the Irish Republican Army, went to bed in Belfast gaol last night for the fifteenth day without food. He and 28 other members of the I.R.A. are serving sentences for criminal acts. They complained about food and other conditions and demanded political treatment. Eventually McAteer, who is aged 28, and his righthand man, James >Steele, were chosen to be the first hunger strikers. McAteer, and the 28 others wlio started the hunger strike later, drink plenty of water. The Daily Express says McAteer is now weak and is showing signs of strain.
