Severe Flooding in Gisborne District

Severe flooding of the low-lying country near Gisborne caused severe damage > to crops but stock losses are not expect- > ed to be very heavy, for although tho 5 overflow of the Waipaoa River came ? with little warning most settlers had > sufficient time to move their stock to safe areas. It is expected that road and rail b communication with other districts will . be dislocated for several days. No i mails have been received since the i weekend and none are expected to get l away before the end of the week. Many settlers are isolated in a sea of ■■ water over the flat land several feet s deep in some parts, and some near Te • Karaka, 20 miles from Gisborne, had to abandon their homes. The rainfall at Te Karaka for the 24 hours ended this s morning totalled 6.5 to 7 inches, less \ | than half an inch below the record, s The flood waters began to recede thii afternoon but are still high.
