Grandstand Wrecked.
While places to the north and south ot' Palmerston North received the full] force of the southerly storm last Fri- ; day, Palmerston North escaped with no more than a very light wind. The roof of the grandstand iu the outside enclosure at the Wanganui racecourse was lifted off bodily by a gale in the early hours of the morning and deposited partly on the home industries building behind the stand and partly on the ground. The wind lifted the top portion clear of the pillars and walls in one piece, but most of the structure landed ’ liat on the ground behind without doing ! much damage to the corrugated iron, ’ most of which can be salvaged. The. L westerly wall of glass and wood was blown out at the same time aud smasht ed on the ground alongside. The damage is estimated at £IO,OOO. . The Distinguished Flying Cross has > been awarded to Flight-Lieut. O. P. , Olson, of Auckland, states a Press Association message.
