Foxton

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Miss Joyce Philps, of Norbiton Road, was taken to the Palmerston North Hospital Sunday evening suffering from acute appendicitis. Mr. D. Cresswell, of Wanganui, who spent his boyhood in Foxton when his late father was engine-driver of the FoxtonPalmerston North train, spent a few days in Foxton renewing old friendships. Mrs G. Newton and her small son Barry are spending a holiday with her father, Mr. P. J. Barry, of Hunterville. Gunner A. C. McArtney is spending his furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs C. McArtney, of Main Street. Mrs R. Smith, of Avenue Road, has returned home after a pleasant holiday in Bulls. Private S. V. Bills and his wife, of Wellington, stayed the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. Bills, of Main Street. Mr. and Mrs. J. Newton, of Park Street, were delighted to hear the voice of their son Graham over the air on Sunday and more than pleased to hear that he had seen his brother Doug, and that both are well. Gunner B. R. Goodwin is spending his furlough at the home of his parents, Constable and Mrs Goodwin, of Lady’s Mile. Mr. F. H. Murray, of Hilary Street, has returned from a health-recruiting trip to Te Aroha and the East Coast. Miss M. Bloomfield of Baker Street is spending her annual holiday in Wellington as the guest of her sister-in-law, Mrs. L. Bloomfield. A.C. 11. F. L. Smith and his wife, are holiday-making with his mother, Mrs. R. Smith, of Avenue Road. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Kelly, Mrs. T. Voyce and her children, all of Wellington, are the guests of Mr and Mrs T. Hughes, ot Lady’s Mile. Stoker Royce Evans is on leave and staying with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Evans, Avenue Road. Private R. J. McArtney is spending his leave at his home in Main Street. Mothers and Wives' Club. There was an excellent attendance at the annual meeting of the Mothers and Wives’ Club presided over by Mrs. H. Podmore (president). The secretary (Mrs Riches) reported that during the year there had been eleven well attended monthly meetings. Throughout the year there had been a steady increase in members and 199 cakes and 105 parcels of chocolates had been despatched to Foxton boys overseas. Those members whose husbands or sons are prisoners-of-war are given in cash, the equivalent of the cakes and chocolates, as only the next-of-kin may send parcels to these men. Three Foxton boys this year made the supreme sacrifice Privates V. Rand, A. J. Griffin and B. Mohekey. The sympathy of all is given to the relatives. The balance sheet disclosed a very satisfactory financial position, the result of the splendid work done by this band of energetic women. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted: President, Mrs. H. Podmore (re-elected); vice-president, Mrs E. Ebbett; Treasurer, Miss E. Barber, secretary, Mrs Riches (re-elected). Then over a cup of tea came that part of the afternoon to which so many of the members look forward to, when letters, snaps, and souvenirs sent by the boys overseas are read or handed round. The hostesses for this month were Mesdames A. Calder, F. Robinson, S. Wright. W.D.F.U. The Mouloa W.D.F.U. held another successful fortnightly dance in the Moutoa Hall. The M.C. was Mr. J. Lucinsky and the novelty dances were won by: Lucky Gay Gordons, Miss Shirley Newth and Mr. Lethbridge; Monte Carlo, Mr. J. Coles (Shannon), and Miss Mounsey •.Foxton).
