Phenomenal Rain In Gisborne Area

WALL OF WATER CARRIES 200 LAMBS AWAY (Per Press Association.) GISBORNE, March 6. Without warning a wall of water several feet high swept down the bed of the Wuingake Stream during a storm which raged throughout the dis trict and carried uway 200 lambs being driven across a ford which until then had shown little rise. Len Shanks, son of the owner (Mr. H. R. Shanks) had a narrow escape from drowning as ho scrambled to save his horse which was tethered in the danger area. Phenomenal rain fell in the district to-day and 1.85 inches were recorded in a two-hour period. Flooding occurred in the town and the railway is blocked by a slip between Gisborne and Wairou.
