Notes of the Day

Mr. «T. W. Sporle, who has conducted a retail butcher's shop in Feilding for the past twenty years, has disposed of the business and is retiring. Mushrooms have made their appearance in the Feilding district, responding to the warm rains which have promoted growth of pastures over an area which had dried up very considerably. With the introduction of meat rationing to-day, Feilding Householders on Friday and Saturday made good use of their shopping activities in making purchases of meat with the object of tiding them over the initial stages of rationing, lamb and mutton were purchased and on lamb and mutton w*re purchased and on Saturday morning business in butchers’ shops was somewhat brisk. The beneficial rains which fell over Feilding on Thursday night and Friday have produced excellent results. The total fall to 9 a.m. on Friday was .Olins., and to 9 a.m. on Saturday the measurement was .101ns., making a total fall for the 48 hours of I.Olins. In the back country the downpour was heavier judging by the condition of the Oroua River, which carried a moderate volume of flood - waters on Friday. Recently pupils of the Feilding High School debated the question as to whether a children’s playground was necessary in Feilding. In the course of the discussions the pupils advanced many reasons against the provision of such an amenity, the views being overwhelmingly against the idea. Briefly, it was contended that the open spaces in and about Feilding, together with the absence of anything approaching congestion in the residential areas, did not suggest that there was a call for any special playground for children. The question is likely to come before the Borough Council in the near future when a decision will be taken as to the. disposal of the playground equipment which was removed from the riverside at Johnston Park.
