Confused Situation in Argentine
CHILE BECOGNISES FAEEELL EEGIME Eeceived Sunday, 8,60 p.m. WASHINGTON, March 4. „, TI ? 0 New Herald-Tribune’s Washington correspondent says Chile’s recognition of the Farrell regime in effect broke the united front with which the United States hoped all the Americas except Bolivia would approach the Argentina problem. The Wasnington correspondent of the New York Times says Mr. Edward Stettinius (Assistant-Secretary of btate) revealed that the United" States Government has not yet entered into official recognition of the Farrell regime. Mr. Stettinius intimated that this state of virtual non-recognition will continue until Argentina takes the steps necessary for complete alignment with hemispheric solidarity. Such steps should include, firstly, the internment of Axis diplomats, military attaches and other agents still at liberty; secondiy, the expulsion of Axis spies; thirdly, the termination of the smuggling of vital goods to the Axis; fourthly, the prevention of business transactions and the curtailment of communications with the Axis. It is reported from Washington that the American Ambassador in Buer/js Aires has instructions not to have official relations with the Argentine Government. The political situation remains confused and there is some doubt in London as to what is the exact diplomatic position. It is assumed that the United States Ambassador will take no action which might imply recogni-1 tion of the present regime. Britain is continuing to watch and study the whole position. The British Ambassador meanwhile refrains from taking steps of a formal character regarding the Argentine Administration. The Chilean Foreign Affairs Department has announced that the Chilean Government regards the Farrell Government in Argentina as a continuation of the Ramirez regime. Therefore no question of recognition is involved. I lie Germans are experimenting with a gas carpet. ” Something for our scientists to beat.
