Quads Born to Unmarried Woman

FATHER A MARRIED AMERICAN SOLDIER Received Friday, 9.20 p.m. LONDON, March 3. Quadruplets were born to 23-year-old Nora Carpenter at Ileanor, Derbyshire, on February 27. Miss Carpenter, who is not married, stated that the father of her children was an American soldier who has a wife but no children in America. She added: ‘‘l am hoping arrangements can be made to enable us to be married some time in the future. ’ ’ The Heanor Urban Council opened a public subscription for the quadruplets who are all doing well and has also offered to provide a larger house for the mother who is receiving thousands of goodwill messages and many gifts of clothing from all parts of the country. The soldier’s wife in America stated that her husband had asked her to divorce him when he knew that Miss Carpenter’s baby was expected but the wife replied that she was a Catholic and still cared for him. She added that she would never give him a divorce. A Washington message states that the quadruplets born in Heanor, England, will be eligible for a dependancy payment of 90 dollars monthly if the father is an American soldier and acknowledges parentage.
