Rommel Withdraws Nine Miles

British Armoured Units Take Over Positions Received Saturday, 1 a.m. LONDON, Sept. 4 The Daily Telegraph’s Western Desert correspondent says the Afrika Korps under cover of darkness started voluntarily withdrawing from the stovepipe shaped area wherein they have been pressed since dawn on Monday and have retreated nine miles southwards. The Associated Press states that British tanks and armoured cars moved up and took over the positions which the enemy abandoned. A message from Cairo says that British guns forced Rommel to withdraw his armoured forces south-westward by stopping them from getting supplies. Another reason for the withdrawal was the German need to reinforce their mobile artillery.
