Chinese Surround Kinhwa
LONDON, Sept. 2. The Chinese report that Kinhwa, important Japanese base in the seaboard province of Chekiang, has been encircled and that Chinese forces have closed in behind the Japanese defenders. The fall of the city is said to be imminent. In the neighbouring province of Klangsl, the Chinese are now within striking distance of the capital, Nanchang. Farther south, the Chinese are now only 40 miles north of Canton on the railway to Hankow. A battle is raging all along this railway front. A New Dglhi communique states that in an offensive reconnaissance in Burma on Sunday the R.A.F. bombed and machine-gunned Kalewa, on the Chindwln River. Hits wer r «cored on buildings and river boats, au pianes returned safely. A Chungking message says that American bombers attacked Myitkyina, in Burma, on Monday, starting large flreß. Barracks, warehouses and railway buildings were the targets.
