A great convoy attempted to dash through during the night but was trapped in a hail of fire and unable to advance or fall back. Only a tew lorries recrossed the Don and the corridor is now a smoking mass of wrecked vehicles. The German News Agency says Kalach was captured after a battle lasting several days. It is a keystone of the Stalingrad fortifications. The Moscow correspondent of the Daily Express says the Russians now hold almost half of RJev and have taken several more villages, but progress is slow and painful. The Russians are continuing their advance on the central front, says the Moscow radio. All German efforts to stop the advance have failed. In one sector the enemy were dislodged from a key position. The enemy retreated but brought up reserves and launched a suecessTUl counter-attack. Despite numerical inferiority the Russians rallied and in turn pushed the enemy back. Sovie. art.llery inflicted heavy losses on the retreating enemy. During the day the Germans launened 27 counter-attacks in order to retake the position but ail were ueaten off. According to the Moscow radio the .iussians are delivering heavy countero.ows soutn of Krasnodar where they dispersed and wiped out five infantry battalions and recaptured several commanding heights. The battle continues in the Prophladnaya vicinity. The Germans unsuccessfully again attempted to cross the Terek River in the Mosdok area. Heavy local fighting is reported in the Lake Ilmen and Leningrad areas. The Black Sea Fleet without loss raided by night a port where the Germans had accumulated a small fleet, apparently intended for use for a landing in the Northern Caucasus. Planes dropped flares, after which the Russian warships launched a bombardment and sank a number of vessels and destroyed a big oil dump. The Black Sea Fleet is still a fighting force and is valiantly aiding the Red Army in the Caucasus. It has carried out raid after raid on enemyheld ports. The fleet’s guns are smashing up German landing parties attempting to cut in behind the Russian forces barring the way to Tuapse and Novorossisk, Black Sea naval bases.

Berlin claims that Germans and Rumanians south of the Lower Kuban overcame a stubborn resistance and broke through along the Eastern coast of the Black Sea, where the Rumanians took the town and harbour of Anapa.
