Levin Wedding of Wide District Interest
MARTIN—HITCHINGS. On the afternoon of Saturday August 1 St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Levin was decorated with pink and blue for the marriage of Hilda Jean, youngest daughter of Mrs F. J. Hitchings, of Devin and William George Martin, R.N.Z.A.F., second son of Mr and Mrs C. Martin, of Woodville. Rev. N. H. Finch performed the ceremony and Miss E, Anderson played the Wedding March hnd hymra. The youthful bride was escorted to the altar by her uncle, Mr McKay of Hastings, wearing a long gown of ivory georgette over delicate pink taffeta. The frock was made with long bishop sleeves gathered in on a band at the wrist dnd from a tiny yoke the gatherings were again swathed softly across the neckline and gathered down the front and with a row of self covered buttons from neck to the waist line at the back. From a fitting corsage the skirt fell in soft folds to form an oval train and over this fell a matching veil caught to th 6 head with a half circlet of orange blossom. To complete a dainty toilette she wore silver shoes and carried a lovely shower
bouquet of winter roses, freesies, pistel shaded Iceland poppies and maidenhair fern tied with tulle and silver ribbon streamers. Her only attendant was her sister Miss Evelyn Hitchings, who was gowned in striped blu-e taffeta made w}th a heart-shaped neckline, short puffed sleeves and self covered buttons adorning the back. The skirt was finely pleated round the hip-line and fell softly to the ankles to show the silver shoes and she wore pink velvet flowers in her hair and carried a bouquet similar to that of the brides.
Private G. Fisher, of New Plymouth, carried out the duties of best man and Privates W. Watson and C. Finlayson were the ushers. On leaving the church the bridegroom’s niece, little June Turner, of Feilding presented the bride with a lucky horseshoe. After the ceremony a reception was held in the Druids’ Hall. Mrs Hitchings received about 90 guests wearing a smart navy blue suit and hat relieved -with touches of white and a fur stole and she carried a posy of roses, freesias and fern, Mrs Martin assisted her wearing a navy ensemble with touches of red artd carried a posy to tone. The bride's maternal grandmother, Mrs McKay of Waikanae was present wearing a black ensemble relieved with touches of white. Rev. Finch was the toastmaster. The two-tiered wedding cake was a gift, made and iced by Mrs Swaysland, an aunt of the bride. The young couple received many beautiful gifts and telegrams of good wishes from far and wide including a cable from the bridegroom’s brother in the Middle East.
Dater in the evening when the young couple appeared for travelling the bride had chosen a smart blue afgalaihe frock, dusky pink coat and black hat and accessories to tone. Amidst showers of confetti and good wishes, they left for Hawke’s Bay.
