Spectre of Russian Winter Confronts Germans
LONDON, Aug. 31. It Will be many weeltß before snow and slush bog down the Germans in South Russia, where the winter comes late, but the first slight snowfall is reported from North Sweden. Helsinki gave out a frost warning.
Posters in Rumania proclaftn that winter is coming, adding: “Think of our soldiers who will again have to endure the Russian cold.” The Rumanian reserve officers are organising the collection of warm clothing and country folk have been ordered to produce quotas of sheepskins and rabbitskins. The Hungarian Youth Organisation is helping in a similar drive.
German huntsmen and foresters are asked to procure the maximum number of foxskins. A German fur company has been set up in Poland.
A 8.8. C. foreign language broadcast said that Hitler and his unhappy satellites are again committed to another terrible winter of suffering in Russia. Hitler has dismissed General Von List, the conqueror of Poland, who was recently sent to Yugoslavia to stamp out guerrilla activities, reports the Italian radio. Colonel-General Loehr succeeds Von List.
Reuter’s correspondent says that Von List is reported to have recently written to Hitler criticising the present operations and warning against the danger of a second winter campaign In Russia.
