Huge Bombs Delight Pilots
(Special Australian Correspondent.) SYDNEY, Aug. 21. Massive bombs, which had to be hauled to the planes by tractors, were used in a recent Allied raid on Lae, New Guinea. Many of the pilots, who had not used such bombs before, were delighted with their -effectiveness, reports B. J. Anderson, Sydney Daily Telegraph war correspondent. One pilot said: “When we unloaded them on Lae everything in the vicinity where they landed—trees, buildings—just vanished in a great eruption of smoke and flame. When we flew back over the places hit there was nothing left except hugh craters, which could clearly be seen from the great altitude at which we were flying.” A bomber pilot flying at a lower level said his mach.ne bucked like a colt when the explosion blast caught the plane. The bombs contain explosives of tremendous power, and it is believed the Japanese would have to carry bombs four times their size to get the same effect.
