Calyton

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Seldom has the Colyton Hall been the scene oi such a large gathering as that which took place on the oecassion of a social and aance in honour of two well known young men of the district, Privates N. Walker and B. Muihodand, who together with Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Nicholson were the recipients of a joint presentation. Mr. and Mrs. Nicholsou with their small daughter, Joan, are leaving this district where Mr. Nicholson has for many years been the popular . headmaster of the local school. Items were contributed by Miss F. Grey, Mr. N. Shortall and Miss M. Garrett, who also acted as the accompanist. The presentation to the soldiers was performed by Mr. W. J. Smith who, on behalf of the patriotic societies, handed each a wallet, while as the representatives of Aratika residents, Mr. C. Wilson handed Pfce. I Walker a suitable memento. Both Mr Smith and Mr. Wilson referred to the many years the young men had spent in the locality where they had won f*>r themselves a large circle of friends. As the representative of the Women's PaI triotic Society. Mrs H. Shepherd asked the soldiers' acceptance of suitable gifts. Prior to making the presentation to Mr. and Mrs.* Nicholson, Mr. A. O. Allerby, acting on behalf of the school committee, requested Mr. Smith to address the gathering. This speaker spoke at length of the untiring interest and work Mr. and Mrs. Nicholson had devoted, not only to the welfare of the schoolchildren but also to all the many organisations in Colyton. Mr. Allerby stated that he could only endorse the previous speaker’s remarks and proceeded to present to Mr. and Mrs. Nicholson a dinner service and Bet of cutlery from the residents while little Joan Nicholson was given a book from her playmates. At St. Andrew’s Church, Colyton. parishioners took the opportunity of making a presentation to the Rev. W. L. Low in recognition of his work during a long connection with St. Andrew’s. In asking Rev. Low’s acceptance of a cheque, Mr W. Hocken expressed the wish of the congregation in requesting him to purchase with the amount two stoles . when occassion was offered to procure them. Rev.
