Makomako
(From Our Own Correspondent.) There was a good attendance at the August meeting of the Women’s Institute. Members spent a profitable afternoon packing parcels for local lads overseas and for our quota to the Patriotic Council. Members and friends kindly donated Christmas cakes and other atricles of good cheer which were included in the
parcels. It was decided to make a cash donation towards the parcel to be sent by next-of-kin to Gunner Ronald Sonntag, a prisoner of war. A small donation supplemented by voluntary contributions, will be sent to the Leper Appeal. A letter was received from Trooper Gordon Eddie ex-
on benalf of himself and othc. Makomako boys overseas, appreciation oi parcel received “from our own home district.” Mrs Hoggard read the thought for the month. The winners of the Best Bloom Competition were Mrs Eddie 1, Mrs Callender 2, Mrs El win 3.
Miss Clarice Beckett of Wanganui Girls’ College is spending the spring vacation with her parents at Nikau. Mr E. Scholes has returned from a visit to New Plymouth.
There was a smaller attendance than usual at the monthly meeting of the Red Cross Sewing Circle held at Mrs Callender’s residence, when the afternoon was spent in making hospital comforts. Local ladies are invited to spend at least o*. afternoon a month at this increasingly Important work.
Mr W. W. Day presided at the monthly meeting of the local committee when matters relative to school cleaning and upkeep of grounds were discussed and satisfactory arrangements made for these works to be carried out.
