Sweeping Chinese Success in Chekiang
Japanese Admit Withdrawals Received Sunday, 9.50 p.m. CHUNKING, Aug. 29. Following the capture of Chuhsien and Lishui the Chinese launched a vigorous new offensive 40 miles north of Canton aiong the Canton-nankow railway, reports the Central China News. The Chinese have already captured Pakong, Kweitouling and Nangchanngau anu are pursuing the japan ese who are still retreating. The Chinese re-occupation of Licntang, Chuhsien and Tsindien has steadily widened the section of the Chekiang-Kiangsi railway already recovered and has also brought the Chinese closer to Naneliang. It is estimated that the Japanese withdrawals in Chekiang and Kiangsi have already embraced over 10,000 square miles which the Japanese systematically looted, the inhabitants suffering great hardships. The Japanese destroyed all the installations. The Tokio official radio admitted that the Japanese forces were abandoning the entire field of operations in Chekiang and Kiangsi, “having completely mastered the enemy.” American bombers on Friday made their third raid on Japanese bases which could be used for an enemy invasion of Yunnan nrovince. Thev bombed the Hanoi-Laokia railway, also ammunition and fuel dumps in Indochina. The Americans bombed Haip&ng nn Saturday and Thursday in an attempt to break up connentra fions and dpstrov invasion supplies. An official review of the throe and e-half months’ campaign in the Chekiang and Kiangsi porvinces discloses that the Japanese suffered 14.000 casualties at Kinhwa and Lanchi, 18.000 at Chuhsien and 8000 at Shangiao. The present situation is now ns it was before the Japanese started their drive from Nanchang.
