FJJME EXAMPLE OF CARVING. NEW PLYMOUTH. Aug. 25. Excellent specimens of Maori craftsmanship in a sound state of preservation have been unearthed during draining operations in a swamp at Tikorangi, near j Waitara. A veritable treasure trove for a student of Maori history, they are consid- j ereu to form a valuable link with the | past. 1 The specimens iucauucU a magnificent I example of Maori carving, evidently part lof the front of an important whare of an 1 ancient Maori pa. It was carved out of a Isolid block of totara, about 7ft. long and I I4in. or 16in. wide and about sin. thick. There are five carved figures, all of which 'are different. Four are complete and in I perfect condition, showing careful attention to detail. The carving that links the figures shows delicate delineations that were a feature of the ancient Maori craftsman’s art. There were also found five staves about 6ft. 6in. long, one of which is intact. Of very light wood and deep grey in colour, it is perfectly rounded. It is about sin. in circumference at its widest part, and has a smooth finish that could not be excelled by craftsmen of with modern tools. The discovery was made by Mr L. A. Alexander on his property. Near by is a Maori fortified pa or redoubt known as “Pinchgut,” so named by bushrangers during the Maori War because they were I on short commons there. It is considered that, when the Maoris had to leave <he redoubt on being attacked by northern Maoris, they threw the carvings into the swamp to hide them, intending to return later and retrieve them.
