Beceived Friday, 1.30 a.m. MOSCO W, Aug. 27.
Tlie news of the Yiazina-Rjev offensive has thrilled Moscow. Rumours thereof have spread throughout the capital for days, but last night's communique is the first puuiic reference. The newspaper Pravda says mas3os of artillery, trench mortars and pianos are involved in stubborn bloody battles. The Russians have broken into Rjev from the north and street fighting is progressing. Russian tanks northward are going into battle in the rear of German fortifications. Rjev itself is m ruins. The Germans strongly fortified this district and their lerro-concrete dug-outs are engineering feats. The Germans have orders to stop the Russians at all costs and they are clinging to every inch of ground, but the Russian artillery is pounding fortifications and tanks and destroying German dugouts, automatic riflemen finishing off Germans trying to escape from tbo ruined dug-outs. Russian troops move forward yard by yard, occupying trench after trench. Each trench holds dozens of German dead, many machine-guns and rifles and sometimes wholj batteries. The Germans are loath to leave their blockhouses and scores are bumd beneath the debris thereof. Dozens ol prisoners, exhausted and dishevelled are being sent to the Russian rear.
