Finns Thwart Southern Attack Sweden Discovers Widespread Spying by Soviet Agents United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. LONDON, Jan. 4. Sweeping the frozen lakes of the Karelian I sthmus with searchlights, the Finns frustrated a Russian attempt to outflank their poritions. Artillery and machine-gun fire tore the Russian ranks and broke the ice, throwing hundreds of the attackers into the water. A Stockholm message says that the Swedish police have (Recovered widespread Russian espionage, for which Swedish Communists provided secret short-wave radio stations, reporting Swedish troop movements and also the whereabouts of ammunition and volunteers going to Finland. The spies intercept mails and cause disaffection among the peasants, f It is reported that three Russian spies have been arrested on the Karelian Isthmus, the Finnish southern front, including a woman dressed as a Finnish soldier. A big Soviet spy ring has also been discovered in Petsamo, in the far north, including many women.. The leaders were a Finnish captain and lieutenant, who reported to the Ogpu at Murmansk. The captain committed suicide before the authorities discovered the ring and executed several members. •' A Paris message reports that 500 Polish pilots are seeking permission to organise an air force to aid Finland.
