Goodnight from a Thicket

Walking the late-duslc road alone, I stumbled on an unseen stone. Hearing the quick step and my breath, a bird, deep-hidden thero beneath tho thicket-branches, stirred, awoke, shook feathers in her nest, and spoke as if to say: “It’s going to rain. Goodnight—l’m going to sleep again!” I paused at that small friendly speech and smiled. Cloud-darkened, out-of-rcach, was every signpost of a star; tho road was rough, the miles stretched far, but in my heart dreamed the out-of-sigkt., the drowsy bird who sang goodnight. Frances Frost
