To-morrow’s Sports
SCOTCH THISTLE EFFORT The revival of Caledonian sports, which have not been held in Palmerston North for the past 12 years, is one of the objects of the monster sports meeting to be conducted on the Shoivgrounds to-morrow, commencing at 11.30 a.m., by the Scotch Thistle Society. An excellent programme, catering for Highland dancing and piping, amateur cycling, running and field events and tabloid sports, has been arranged, and has received the support of a largo number of competitors, including many well-known performers from tho Wellington, Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki districts,, in addition to many local entries. Over 60 entries have been received for the Highland dancing and piping events, in which a very high standard is expected to be reached. The prizes, including several cups, are to the value of over £l5O, and all cups in the Highland events are to be won outright. Two Wellington provincial championships, seantriubhas, under 16, and B grade slow march, are to be contested. Three real Scottish events on the sports programme, which will be conducted by officials of the Palmerston North Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, are the shot putt, throwing the hammer and tossing the caber. There will also be the popular tabloid sports, for which post entries will be received, and races for the children. If the weather is unfavourable the Highland events will be held irr the Produce Hall at the Showgrounds. A very interesting event will be the drummajor’s display by the Manawatu Scottish Society’s Pipe Band. In the evening a social and dance will be held in the Entertainment Hall a 9 a fitting conclusion to the day’s activities. Music will be provided by the Mayfair Full Dance Band.
