New Zealand Airmen Awarded D.F.C.
LONDOS, Jan. 2. His Majesty the King has awarded tho Distinguished Flying Cross to tho New Zealand Pilot Officers Kenneth Neil Gray, of Christchurch, and Frank Hugh Long, of Masterton, pilot and navigator respectively on a night reconnaissance flight over enemy territory during a November snowstorm. Tho piano was badly subjected to anti-aircraft fire. Nevertheless, the flight continued, but it was impossible to reach the objective, the weather rendering it practically impossible to control the plane. The upper surface of one wing and half of the other were stripped of fabric. One flap jammed down, and the wireless failed. The homeward journey involved a flight of 3-12 €niles over sea. Mainly due to the skill, courage and splendid teamwork of the two New Zealanders, tho plane and crew • were safely brought back.
