Fine Response To Seal Campaign
ABOUT 50,000 LETTERS ALREADY IN Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. 3. The office of the National Patriotie Fund Board in Wellington opened today after the holidays, and it received four large bags of mail from the Post Office containing on a rough estimate approximately 16,000 replies from subscribers in all parts of the Dominion to the seal campaign inaugurated by the board to raise money to provide comlorts for the armed forces and mercantile marine. These letters, which were held during the holidays by the postal authorities under instructions from the secretary of the National Patriotic Fund Board, have been added to the largo volume of replies received in the week before the office closed for the holidays. It is difficult to make any accurate estimate of tho numbers from the lightly-packed bundles, but there are 50,000 letters at least waiting to be opened. A start is to be made with the work at the beginning of next weet. Though tho time was short between the inauguration of the campaign and the intervention of tho holiday period, tho response by the public was good. Appreciation of this already has been expressed and reference also has been made by the officers of the National Patriotic Fund organisation to another gratifying feature, the fact that many people sent more than the value of tho seals and others ordered further supplies.
