From Our Own Correspondent. The annual Boxing night dance held by the local branch of the Labour Party was this year as popular and enjoyable as ever. A professional orchestra from Palmerston North infused plenty of vim into the various dance numbers, and tho floor was crowded for every dance, despite the heat of the evening. Two competitions resulted in Mr. H. Lammpe being adjudged the wiruier of a hamper and Mrs. E. Jordon the winner of a cake. Winners of a Lucky Gay Gordons were Miss Mummery and Mr. J. McCartney, and of a Monte Carlo, Mr. and Mrs. Hodge. Surf Club Dance. The hall was comfortably filled on Saturday night on the occasion of the dance held by members of tho Surf and Life-saving Club. Music was supplied for the modern and old-time dance programme by Alan Sundborn and his orchestra, assisted by Mr.' L. Mattar. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs. Bentley and Mr. C. Hodge, and Mrs. J. Neville was the winner of a competition for a fire-screen. Supper was provided by Misses D. and J. Wilson, L. Lynch and Mr. E. Wilson, all of Wellington. Manawatu Boating Club. The Manawatu Boating Club opened the season on Tuesday in glorious weather. There was a good attendance of the public, end the various events were followed with interest in what was more or less of an impromptu regatta. The officials responsible were president, Commodore L. Andrew, Rear-Commo-dore F. Pullyn, Alan Reed (secretary), official handicappers, C. Penny and Messrs. R. Hornblow, S. Rosvall and R. Saunders. Results:—Decorated canoes: Clem Pullyn J, Phil Andrews 2. Canoe race: John Ward 1, Phil Andrews 2. Boys’ row-boat race: Yates family 1. Power boat: Miss Janette 1, Sir Echo 2. Launch race: Mr. Barber 1, Mr. Wes-ton-Webb 2. Motor boat: Miss Kohi I, Miss Manawatu 2; Miss Janette crossed the line first, ' but was disqualified. Motor boat (off scratch): Miss Manawatu 1, Miss Kohi 2, Miss Janette 3. In the evening an enjoyable community sing and impromptu concert was held in the hall, Mr. D. Martin making an efficient song-leader. Mr. L. Andrews scouted for talent amongst tho large audience, and items were rendered by Miss E. Short (elocution), Miss Shirley Reed (recitation), Mrs. Ax (Scottish songs), Mr. F. Pullyn (humorous monologues), Messrs. Martin and t Pullyn (duets), Ted Shortt (tapj dances), Billy Nellie and 1. Saveli' (pianoforte and drums) and items by the band (Neville’s swing patrol). Tl*e hall was cleared later for a danco when I a collection to defray expenses was ( taken up.
