Unfortunately, quite a | strong westerly wind was blowing, mak- = ing conditions rather unpleasant lor the = spectators. Ilotvever, the afternoon’s | entertainment was well organised. The = officials responsible for the running of I the events were:—Judge and starter for E launches, A. R. TV. Scott; judge and = starter for rowing boats and canoes, L. E J. E Bowing race: The river was choppy 1 and the conditions anything but ideal | for rowing. Miss Lindsay Crabbe put = up a splendid performance and doubt- = less would have won the race had she | not mistaken the liuishing post. The | winners were: Frank Spry 1 (the prize | being donated by Mr. K. Wrightson), | Noel Miles, Marton 2 (Mr. R. McKen- § zie’s prize) 2, Miss Lindsay Crabbe 3 | (Mr. Parnell’s special prize). § Canoe race: The canoe race attracted | much attention, the winners being: B. | Jenkins, Feilding (Mr. Mochan’s prize) = 1, L. Morris (Feilding) 2, J. C. Cordiner, § Petone (special Drize donated by Mrs. | F. Parnell) 3. s The big race of the day, the speed | boat race for the It. lv. Ayers Challenge s Cup, was a real thrill. John Penney’s § skilful handling of his boat, Buzzaloug, | won for him the coveted trophy. S To all members who worked so con- | scientiously to make this initial perfor- | mance such a success, the thanks of the | public is due, with perhaps a spocial | word of thanks to Mr. J. V. Kyle for E the efficient manner in which he | handled the river traffic, his assistance S bring a great help to competitors. New Year’s Dance. | The Beautifying and Improvement | Society held their New Year’s dance on | Monday evening, the attendance being | the largest for many years. Novelty | dances were won by Miss B. Cooper and s Mr. S. Wright and Miss H. Massey and | Mr. Churchill. The duties of M.C. were | carried out by Mr. J. C. Johnson and | the supper arrangements were in tlie | hands of Mesdames J. Prior to going to 5 National Park to live, Mr. and Mrs. = Quinlan visited Tangimoaua eaca | Christmas, but it is now several years E since they have spent a vacation here i and they have had a busy time renew- § ing old acquaintances. Their guests S while they were here included: Mr. and § Mrs. Harford, of Hunterville; Mis 3 = Simpson and Messrs. Iladdon, Kenny | and L. Frost, of National Park. Mrs, | Quinlan’s holiday, her friends will re- § gret to hear, has been rather spoilt | through an injury to a foot which has E proved troublesome at times. = Mr. and Mrs. W. Green and Misses | Green have returned to Feilding after | spending the Christmas at their beach E cottage. Buring their stay Mrs. | Green's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. S and Mrs. A. Keir, of Masterton, speni i a few days with them. = Mr. and Mrs. J. Lyon and family, of | Palmerston North, and Mr. Alf Lyon, | also of Palmerston North, spent the I Christmas with Mrs. 8. Lyon. | Mr. and Mrs. W. Angell have retunis ed to Johnsonville after spending a few | days with Mrs. R. Sinclair at her beach E cottage.

Harford, of Feilding," have S returned home after spending the | Christmas and New Year at Air. | Stevens’ cottage, “Idleawbile.” § The friends of Mrs. George Alsop, 5 who has been in. hospital some weeks = now, will regret to learn her condition § is causing the family considerable I anxiety.
