From Our Own Correspondent. Defouce Rifle Club The annual New Year’s Day open championship shoot was fired on the ; Ashhurst range on Monday over the . 300, 500 and 600 yards ranges. There was a fair attendance. Conditions were . very tricky; a rear fish-tail wind keep- , ing scores well below standard for tho range. Tho aggregate for tho J. B. Soarle Cup resulted in a tie, and a , shoot-off between B. E. Stuart and J. C. Williamson saw tho latter take the honours by one point. The conditions speak for themselves when not one handicap man headed the scratch scorers. Tho sweep prize-money -was won by B. E. Stuart (97), J. C. Williamson (97), H. Buchanan (96) aud B. A. Ladies’ Championship Tho annual ladies’ championship was < fired on the .22 range at 25 yards, when ten ladies competed.' Mrs. B. Lewis and Mrs. M. Hausmann. In tho shoot-off Mrs. Hausmann made a break of eight bullseyes and Mrs. Lewis njado three to take second place in tho championship and to win the club trophy for a lady shooter who has not previously won a trophy. The winner of tho championship, Mrs. Hausmann, made her second consecutive win. In the novice section Miss A. Baird was the winner with the good score of 28. Tho best cards returned were: Mrs. Hausmann, 34 and 8 bulls; Mrs. B. Lewis, 34 and 3 bulls; Miss Z. Cook, 29; Miss A. Baird, 28; Miss Mary McCrae, 26; Miss L. McCrae, 26; Mrs. Uhrbom, 25; Miss Beth Bomley, 20. The boys’ shoot resulted in Keith Groves (33) first and B. Drummond (32) second. At the conclusion of tho shoot, tho president, Mr. W. G. Bomley, thanked all for their attendance and congratulated the ladies on their efforts. The president, in presenting the trophies, congratulated Rifleman Williamson on being the first visiting rifleman to win tho open championship cup. Previous winners have been: 1934, B. A. Jones; 1935, W. G. Bomley; 1936, 1937, 1938, B. iSearle; 1939, F. Booking. Ladies’ championship: Mrs. B. A. Jones, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1938, retired; Mrs. M. Hausmann, 1939, 1940.
