MANAWATU BOWLING TOURNAMENT

Post-section Play PAIRS NARROWED DOWN TO FOUR Post-section play in the Manawatu Bowling Centre’s New Yeai* pairs tournament was commenced yesterday, and when the adjournment was made for the day the competitors had been narrowed down to four, who will contest tho semi-flnals and final to-day. These pairs are: J. A. Colquhoun and E. Bary (Palmerston North), A. J. King and T. R. Hodder (Northern), F. Rosvall and C. L. Mowlem (Palmerston North), J. Child and R. Ramsay (Palmerston North). Fleming (Taihape), who had gone through the section play without a loss, was eliminated in his first game, Tingey (Feilding), beating him 21-15. An extra head was necessary in the game between Childs and Gordon, both of Terrace End. The former, witn the score 20-19 against him, secured one on the last head and then snatched the victory with another single on tho extra head. Healey (Gonville) went close to eliminating Bary (Palmerston North). With 18 heads played, Bary led 15-11, but lost the last three, Healey getting singles on each. No less than 11 heads wera burned in the second round game between Skoglund (Northern) and Pilkington (Pahiatua). Skoglund went into tho lead after tho tenth head, and tho board was reading 18-17 with only one left to bo contested. This saw Northern get two. Bary had a runaway win against G. Kershaw (Pahiatua), the margin being 32-11. In Bary’s score was included a six. There was close scoring in the match between Mowlem and Paton, both of Palmerston North. Paton had 20-18 with only the last head left, and with Mowlem securing two an extra head was necessitated. This went to Mowlem, who secured a single. In the third round two of tho four games produced exciting finishes. Mowlem was leading Wenham (Feilding) 20-16 with 19 heads gone, and then Wenham secured a five to take the lead. Mowlem needed two on tho last head to win and this he secured. Skoglund and Bary were IS-all on the 19th. head. Bary scored two on the 20th. and Skoglund replied with a similar score on the 21st. The extra head saw Bary obtain a single. Hodder and J. Kershaw, both of Northern, kept close together, the score being 13-all at the 18th. head. Hodder then secured two and four in succession. Needing six on the last head to keep the game alive, Kershaw secured a single. Ramsay had a comfortable win against Arnott, leading from the Bth. head onward, although there was never much in his favour until the last three heads.
